Historically, the use of surgical gowns dates back to the 1920s, when they were initially used for the purpose of protecting surgeons’ clothing during operations. However, as evidence began to show post-operative infections occurring in patients, the role of the surgical gowns has become much more pivotal to determining the success of a surgical procedure. Today, their use has greater significance, as they not only protect the clothing of the surgeon, but more importantly, they protect the surgeon and patient from operative and post-operative infection. In the 1960s, surgical gowns became more specialized, incorporating an exhaust helmet system, which drastically decreased the risk of postoperative joint infection (PJI) after joint replacement surgeries. As of 2011, only two companies in the United States, Stryker and Ecolab, provided such highly protective gowns and helmet systems to the U.S. market.
