Abstract:

Approximately ten percent of the babies born in Europe are premature or have medical conditions that require additional care. These babies are usually treated at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Depending on the severity of the illness, the baby goes into a NICU warmer or incubator. An incubator is a closed environment where temperature, moisture and oxygen levels can be regulated; the baby is less easily accessed, and therefore the baby’s condition must be fairly stable. The most severely ill babies will need NICU warmers; these are open environments, and the baby can be easily and regularly accessed.
