SDRs can be defined as a communication system where the features of the communication system can be reconfigured and updated by changing the software. The SDR traces its history to early 1980s, when E Systems, Inc. (U.S.) which is now part of the Raytheon Company (U.S.) introduced the term „software radio‟ in their company newsletter. But the developments in the SDRs started taking place in the early 1990s with the military program DARPA‟s introduction of the “SPEAKeasy” project, which was aimed to have a radio which could support large number of military radio procedures or protocols. The year 1996 saw the foundation of ”The Modular Multifunction Information Transfer System (MMITS) Forum", which was founded to focus on the developments of the SDRs, it is now known as the ”Wireless Innovation Forum”. This forum takes initiatives and organizes events so as to provide its support to the pioneering use of spectrum and advanced radio technologies.

The need for effective communication systems in various applications such as military, telecommunication, and public safety/civilian government are driving the growth of this market. There are various research and development organizations which are working toward the development of SDRs. Some of the research programs are the research US Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program, SPEAKeasy radio program, and European Secure SDR (ESSOR). The ability of SDR to provide upgradeable, flexible radio equipment to the civilian and military is a prominent factor that is driving its growth. The adaptability of SDR in cellular base stations is also an attractive prospect for the growth of this market.

The SDR market was valued at $XX billion in 2013 and is expected to reach up to $XX billion by 2020, at a CAGR of XX% from 2014 to 2020. The lucrative opportunity for the future lies in the demand of secure communication devices in the military, public safety, and telecommunication infrastructure applications. Growing commercial applications of SDRs; their increasing use in emerging countries; and the benefits that they provide, such as upgradability, re-usability, and re-configurability are some of the factors that are driving the growth of the SDR market.

In this report, the SDR market has been segmented on the basis of the components, applications, and geographies. All the three market segments are also analyzed on the basis of the market trends across the four geographic regions considered in the study.
