The company’s insurance operations are conduct through its various subsidiaries, including Anesthesiologists Professional Assurance Company (APAC); FPIC Insurance Agency, Inc.; First Professionals Insurance Company, Inc.; The Tenere Group, Inc.; Intermed Insurance Company; Interlex Insurance Company; Advocate, MD; Advocate, MD Insurance of the Southwest Inc. (Advocate, MD Insurance); and Advocate Insurance Services, Inc.

The company’s primary insurance products provide protection for physicians, dentists, and other healthcare providers as individual practitioners or as members of practice groups. Its insurance protects policyholders against losses arising from professional liability claims and the related defense costs with respect to injuries alleged to have been caused by medical error or malpractice. Optional coverage is available for professional corporations under which physicians or dentists practice.

As of December 31, 2009, the company’s insurance subsidiaries insured 18,003 MPL policyholders and provided management services to 282 policyholders under alternative risk arrangements. It reinsures portions of its business, principally through its excess of loss reinsurance program. The company markets its coverage primarily through a network of independent agents.

In 2009, the company acquired Advocate, MD Financial Group, Inc., which provides MPL insurance in Texas and also writes MPL insurance in Mississippi.
