Asia-Pacific Mining An Infrastructure Gold Mine
The Disconnect Between Supply And Demand
BMI View: While the Asia-Pacific region holds significant mineral and metal reserves, it has been unable to fully capitalise on this natural resource wealth to meet growing domestic demand. While there are many factors leading to this disconnect between supply and demand, a key factor is the lack of adequate infrastructure. Therefore, we believe that the development of the mining sector in the Asia-Pacific region is a tangible base underpinning the momentum for economic infrastructure in the region. This will continue to create significant growth opportunities for infrastructure companies over the medium term.
The Asia-Pacific region is a major hub of mining activity as it contains large swathes of global mineral and metals reserves. The region holds reserves in a variety of key mineral commodities such as bauxite, copper, iron ore, lead, nickel and zinc, accounting for roughly 10% to 20% of worldwide capacity. The region also holds significant coal reserves, a major resource used to generate electricity and produce steel. According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy June 2010, the Asia-Pacific region held 31.4% of the world’s proven coal reserves at the end of 2009.
We anticipate that demand for these resources in the Asia Pacific region is likely to remain robust. Fast-expanding economic giants such as China and India have emerged as key demand drivers for all types of resources, an appetite that will only strengthen over the coming years on the back of consumer and investment-led economic growth. Our forecasts show that real GDP growth for the Chinese and Indian economy will average a robust 7.3% and 7.8% per annum between 2011 and 2020 respectively, with many smaller Asia-Pacific economics also growing at a similarly blistering pace.
