Summary

Power generation costs are the key to determining the best generation mix for a reliable supply of electricity while making it available for use economically. With an increasing demand for power for economic development, countries around the world need to evaluate the present and future costs of generating electricity using the presently available and future power generation technologies. Evaluating the cost of power generation depends on various factors that are responsible for driving the prices of electricity. The most important factors driving the power generation costs are government policies and incentives, capital (investment cost), fuel costs, operations and maintenance (O&M) costs of power plants and air emission control costs for coal and natural gas plants. Based on these factors, the cost of power generation is calculated and estimated by using the electricity generation of each technology as a weighting factor. Comparison between power generation technologies with respect to cost can only be made by calculating the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) over the technology’s economic life. The LCOE can provide a comparison of different power generation technologies on the basis of their unequal economic life, capital cost, risk and returns, capacity factor, efficiencies or plant heat rate, fuel costs and lead time of construction.
