About Natural Gas Services Group Inc.

Natural Gas Services Group, Inc. provides small to medium horsepower compression equipment to the natural gas industry. The company focuses primarily on the non-conventional natural gas production business in the United States (such as coal bed methane, gas shale and tight gas). It manufactures, fabricates, and rents natural gas compressors that improve the production of natural gas wells and provides maintenance services for those compressors. In addition, the company sells custom fabricated natural gas compressors to meet customer specifications dictated by well pressures, production characteristics, and particular applications. It also manufactures and sells flare systems for oil and gas plant and production facilities.

Operating Units

The company operates through three segments, including Gas Compressor Rental; Engineered Equipment Sales; and Service and Maintenance.

Gas Compressor Rental

The company’s rental business is primarily focused on non-conventional gas production. It provides rental of small to medium horsepower compression equipment to customers under contracts typically having minimum initial terms of 6 to 24 months. As of December 31, 2009, the company had 1,776 natural gas compressors in its rental fleet totaling approximately 223,694 horsepower.

Engineered Equipment Sales

The Engineered Equipment Sales segment includes the following components: compressor fabrication; compressor manufacturing; flare fabrication; and parts sales and compressor rebuilds.

Compressor fabrication: Fabrication involves the assembly of compressor components manufactured by the company or other third parties into compressor units that are ready for rental or sale. In addition to fabricating compressors for its rental fleet, the company engineers and fabricates natural gas compressors for sale to customers to meet their specifications based on well pressure, production characteristics and the particular applications for which compression is sought.

Compressor manufacturing: The company designs and manufactures its own proprietary line of reciprocating compressor frames, cylinders and parts known as its ‘CiP’, or Cylinder-in-Plane, product line. It uses the finished components to fabricate compressor units for its rental fleet or for sale to third parties. The company also sells finished components to other fabricators.

Flare fabrication: The company designs, fabricates, sells, installs, and services flare stacks and related ignition and control devices for the onshore and offshore incineration of gas compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, natural gas, and liquefied petroleum gases.

Parts sales and compressor rebuilds: To provide customer support for its compressor and flare sales businesses, the company stocks varying levels of replacement parts at its Midland, Texas facility and at field service locations. It also provides an exchange and rebuild program for screw compressors and maintain an inventory of new and used compressors to facilitate this part of its business.

Service and Maintenance: The company services and maintains compressors owned by its customers on an ‘as needed’ basis. Natural gas compressors require routine maintenance and periodic refurbishing to prolong their useful life. Routine maintenance includes physical and visual inspections and other parametric checks that indicate a change in the condition of the compressors. The company performs wear-particle analysis on various packages and performs overhauls on a condition-based interval or a time-based schedule.

The company provides its products and services to a customer base of oil and natural gas exploration and production companies operating in New Mexico, Texas, Michigan, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kansas. SWOT Analysis

SWOT, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, is an analytical framework that identifies the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable for a company.

Enhanced SWOT Analysis

Enhanced SWOT is a 3×3 grid that arranges strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats into one scheme:

  • How to use the strengths to take advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to use the strengths to reduce likelihood and impact of the threats?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that obstruct taking advantage of the opportunities?
  • How to overcome the weaknesses that can make the threats a reality?

Upon answering these questions a company can develop a project plan to improve its business performance.

PESTEL Analysis

PESTEL (also termed as PESTLE) is an ideal tool to strategically analyze what influence different outside factors – political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental and legal – exert on a business to later chart its long term targets.

Being part of the external analysis when carrying out a strategic assessment or performing a market study, PESTEL gives an overview of diverse macro-environmental factors that any company should thoughtfully consider. By perceiving these outside environments, businesses can maximally benefit from the opportunities while minimizing the threats to the organization.

Key Factors Examined by PESTEL Analysis:

  • Political – What opportunities and pressures are brought by political bodies and what is the degree of public regulations’ impact on the business?
  • Economic – What economic policies, trends and structures are expected to affect the organization, what is this influence’s degree?
  • Sociological – What cultural and societal aspects will work upon the demand for the business’s products and operations?
  • Technological – What impact do the technological aspects, innovations, incentives and barriers have on the organization?
  • Environmental – What environmental and ecological facets, both locally and farther afield, are likely to predetermine the business?
  • Legal – What laws and legislation will exert influence on the style the business is carried out?

IFE, EFE, IE Matrices

The Internal Factor Evaluation matrix (IFE matrix) is a strategic management tool helping audit or evaluate major weaknesses and strengths in a business’s functional areas. In addition, IFE matrix serves as a basis for identifying and assessing relationships amongst those areas. The IFE matrix is utilised in strategy formulation.

The External Factor Evaluation matrix (EFE matrix) is a tool of strategic management that is typically utilised to assess current market conditions. It is an ideal instrument for visualising and prioritising the threats and opportunities a firm is facing.

The essential difference between the above mentioned matrices lies in the type of factors incorporated in the model; whilst the latter is engaged in internal factors, the former deals exceptionally with external factors – those exposed to social, political, economic, legal, etc. external forces.

Being a continuation of the EFE matrix and IFE matrix models, the Internal External matrix (IE matrix) rests upon an investigation of external and internal business factors integrated into one suggestive model.

  1. What composes a threat of substitute products and services?
  2. Is there a threat of new competitors entering the market?
  3. What is the intensity of competitive rivalry?
  4. How big is the bargaining power of buyers?
  5. How significant is the bargaining power of suppliers?

VRIO Analysis

  • Tangible resources
    • Financial
    • Physical
    • Technological
    • Organizational
