Extended Power Uprates (EPU) to boost Nuclear Electricity Generation in the US
Increasing the maximum power generation level which a commercial nuclear power plant can produce is called a power uprate. The maximum power level at which a commercial nuclear power plant in the US may operate is regulated by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The license and technical specifications document of a nuclear power plant contains this power level. NRC controls any change to a license or technical specification, and the licensee (nuclear power plant operator/ owner) may only change these documents only after the approval of licensee’s application for change by the NRC.
