BMI View: The uptick in growth that we forecast for 2013 has played out. Although full-year data is yet to be released, the Kenyan construction industry grew by an average of 11.1% over the first three quarters of 2013. As such, we now estimate that full-year growth will come in at around 10.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) during 2014. Increased use of the PPP model after the passing of legislation and improved ability of the government to provide financing, owing to increased revenue should see projects move forward as investors gain confidence in the market.

Key Developments

President Uhuru Kenyatta has launched the first phase of the construction of a nearly 500km standard gauge railway, the first in the region, which affirms our belief in a strong period of growth within the country's transport sector over the coming years. There is, however, some controversy surrounding the award of a contract to China Roads and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). Two government probes are ongoing into the alleged lack of competition. While Kenyan procurement requires a competitive tender, it is alleged that in light of Chinese funding for the project, there was none.
