The US SBR Industry Set for Steady Recovery with Increasing Tire Production
The US SBR Industry Set for Steady Recovery with Increasing Tire Production
Summary
The US Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) industry was severely affected by the global economic slowdown. The SBR industry is heavily dependent on domestic tire production as the tire sector accounts for the largest share in the SBR demand. Domestic tire production in the US declined sharply in 2009 due to lower automotive production which subsequently led to a reduction in the demand for SBR. Surging imports of tires from China also hindered the growth in SBR demand. However, the US government decision to impose higher duty on imports of tires from China has given opportunity to the US tire producers to regain the market.
Continuous decline in the demand for SBR in the US caused many producers to cut their production rate. The production of SBR in the US declined from 1.017 million metric tons per annum (MMtpa) in 2005 to 0.788 MMtpa in 2010. However, it is expected to increase steadily from 2011 onwards.
