|Product Name:||Thionyl chloride|
|Appearance:||Colorless to yellow to reddish liquid with a pungent odor of sulfur dioxide.|
|Usage:||For making acyl chlorides, to replace hydroxide of sulfhydryl groups with chlorine atoms.|
Thionyl chloride (sulfinyl chloride, sulfur oxychloride, thionyl dichloride, sulfurous dichloride) refers to an inorganic compound with the molecular formula Cl2OS. Thionyl chloride is a colorless to pale or reddish, non-flammable, distillable liquid with a pungent smell. The liquid is miscible with benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, reacts with water to release hydrogen chloride and sulfur dioxide.
Thionyl chloride is produced by the reaction of sulfur trioxide and sulfur dichloride and by syntheses from phosphorus pentachloride, chlorine, or phosgene.
The compound is used as a chlorinating agent, a major inorganic intermediate used in the chemical industry. Thionyl chloride is used in herbicides, surfactants, drugs, vitamins, and dyestuffs production; in manufacturing of thermoplastics made from iso- and terephthaloyl chlorides. Thionyl chloride takes part in the formation of the useful and highly reactive carboxylic acid chlorides, aromatic sulfochlorides and alkyl chlorides. Besides, thionyl chloride is applied in the synthesis of alkyl chlorides from aliphatic alcohols that are used in protecting agents, dyestuffs and pharmaceutical active ingredients production. Thionyl chloride is used in lithium-thionyl chloride batteries production.
Thionyl chloride is considered as an irritant and causes severe side health effects such as burns and damage to eyes, irritation to skin, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, coughing, wheezing not to mention burning sensation, dermatitis, rhinitis, and pneumonitis.
Thionyl chloride market is covered in the study Thionyl chloride (CAS 7719-09-7) Market Research Report 2013. The report encompasses proper description of the product, unveils application areas, and briefly summarizes patents in the sphere. It overlooks thionyl chloride market situation, names manufacturers, suppliers as well as users. The report also provides current thionyl chloride prices in the market.
