The liquid is miscible with benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, reacts with water to release hydrogen chloride and sulfur dioxide.
Thionyl chloride is produced by the reaction of sulfur trioxide and sulfur dichloride and by syntheses from phosphorus pentachloride, chlorine, or phosgene.
The compound is used as a chlorinating agent, a major inorganic intermediate used in the chemical industry. Thionyl chloride is used in herbicides, surfactants, drugs, vitamins, and dyestuffs production; in manufacturing of thermoplastics made from iso- and terephthaloyl chlorides. Thionyl chloride takes part in the formation of the useful and highly reactive carboxylic acid chlorides, aromatic sulfochlorides and alkyl chlorides.
