The latest update in this series of reports summarises the mood and trends which were apparent at the European yarn fairs for autumn/winter 2012/13. The author of the report visited Expofil, Filo and Pitti Immagine Filati where she interviewed exhibitors and discovered first-hand which trends were proving to be the most popular. Buoyant trading for European spinners throughout the first half of 2011 helped to create a positive and even optimistic mood, despite the economic and political difficulties. Many knitwear yarn buyers are now sourcing more of their yarn from European mills rather than from China, taking advantage of shorter delivery times and lower freight costs. Spinners are still, however, facing higher costs and shortages of some raw materials. Although wool remains the essential main winter fibre, many spinners are blending it with other fibres to keep costs down.
