Key Market Issues

Currency fluctuations negatively impact the import market by raising prices. Weaker currencies, such as the Rial or Dinar, are especially vulnerable due to the lack of established counter and stabilizing mechanisms. The Soft Drinks category would be disproportionally impacted due to its international nature.

Continued political turmoil and change in the region, Egypt's second coup in five years for example, creates an atmosphere that can make producers, especially international players, slightly more hesitant to invest.

In the past few years there have been a number of civil conflicts or unrest, such as in Libya or Syria, which has caused the displacement of populations into different countries which will impact on consumption habits. Whether these are permanent changes is yet to be seen.

After continued growth in pilgrims attending, Hajj saw a steep decline in 2013 due to the effect of the MERS virus. Although this may be a less of a factor going forward a setback of this magnitude may require a recovery of many years even considering the importance placed on Hajj by Muslims globally.

Key Highlights

Qatar will be hosting the 2022 World Cup and this cause an influx of foreign nationals for work and pleasure; this should influence and increase consumption at least for the short term.

Even the traditionally more mature categories such as Hot and Diary Drinks will see solid levels of growth throughout the forecast period.

Continued favorable climates in the region will positively influence sales of Soft Drinks, especially water based products, it also opens the door for Coconut water based products in the future.
