Biodegradable material is a new kind of environmentally friendly material. With the increasing awareness of environmental protection around the world, especially in China, biodegradable materials become very promising products. However, the application of biodegradable materials was not so widely promoted as expected since the Chinese government released the Restriction of Production, Sales and Use of Plastic Bags in 2008. Even so, the capacity of biodegradable materials in China kept growing since then (a CAGR of about 33.8% during 2007-2012). So far, there are mainly four kinds of biodegradable materials in China, namely starch based plastics, PLA, PHA and PBS, among which the capacity of starch based plastics is the biggest in the last few years thanks to its mature production technology in China. To be noticed, the capacity of other biodegradable materials such as PLA (a CAGR of about 28.0% during 2008-2013) expands very fast, which indicates huge potential market in China and around the world.

What are shortages and problems of biodegradable materials industry in China? Where is the market of biodegradable materials in China so far and in the future? What about the future capacity of biodegradable materials in China? What’s the technology of biodegradable materials applied so far and what’s the development direction of the technology in the future?

In order to verify all the above-mentioned questions, the report was generated by CCM through investigation, deep analysis, and detail results of designed questionnaires.

The highlights of the report include:

1. Current market situation of China’s biodegradable materials
2. Current technology and future trend (R&D trend)
3. Domestic policies
4. Shortage and problems of biodegradable materials industry in China
5. Forecast on capacity of biodegradable material, 2014-2019
6. Forecast on demand of biodegradable materials, 2014-2019
7. Forecast on technology improvement
8. Profiles of key domestic players

Key producers of PLA

Key  producers  of  PLA  are  distributed  in  Zhejiang,  Shanghai,  Jiangsu  and  Guangdong.  The capacity of the five key companies is 21,800t/a, accounting for 92.8% of the total capacity in China  in  2013.  As  imported  PLA  has  36.0%  of  the  market  in  2012  and  always  has  better performance, imported PLA is one of the challenges for domestic producers.

Forecast on demand of biodegradable materials, 2014-2019

xxx% of respondents say that they would like to use biodegradable materials if the production cost decreases, which means that the consumption of biodegradable materials will increase quickly if the price goes down. Apart from that, the improvement in application performance and policy encouragement will help increase the consumption of biodegradable materials in the future.
