StoneMor Partners L.P. engages in the ownership and operation of cemeteries in the United States. As of December 31, 2009, the company operated 235 cemeteries in 24 states and Puerto Rico. As of December 31, 2009, it also owned and operated 58 funeral homes in 16 states and in Puerto Rico. In 2009, the company performed 37,782 burials and sold 25,842 interment rights (net of cancellations).

Cemetery Operations

Cemetery operations include sales of cemetery interment rights, merchandise and services and the performance of cemetery maintenance and other services. An interment right entitles a customer to burial space in one of the company’s cemeteries and the perpetual care of that burial space. Burial spaces, or lots, are parcels of property that hold interred human remains. Its cemeteries require a burial vault be placed in each burial lot. A burial vault is a rectangular container, usually made of concrete but also made of steel or plastic, which sits in the burial lot and in which the casket is placed. The top of the burial vault is buried approximately 18 to 24 inches below the surface of the ground, and the casket is placed inside the vault.

One of the principal services that the company provides at cemeteries is an ‘opening and closing,’ which is the digging and refilling of burial spaces to install the vault and place the casket into the vault. As of December 31, 2009, the company provided management services to 16 cemeteries under management or operating agreements with the non-profit cemetery corporations that own the cemeteries.

Funeral Home Operations

As of December 31, 2009, the company owned, operated and/ or managed 58 funeral homes, 26 of which are located on the grounds of cemetery properties that it owns. Its funeral homes offer a range of services to meet a family’s funeral needs, including family consultation, the removal and preparation of remains, provision of caskets and related funeral merchandise, the use of funeral home facilities for visitation, worship and funeral services and transportation services.

Cremation Products and Services

The company operates crematories at some of its cemeteries or funeral homes, but its primary cremation operations are sales of receptacles for cremains, such as urns, and the inurnment of cremains in niches or scattering gardens. The company sells cremation products and services on both a pre-need and at-need basis.

Suppliers

The company purchases caskets from Thacker Caskets, Inc. under a supply agreement.

Competition
