General Communication, Inc. offers communication services in Alaska. The company offers facilities-based local and long-distance voice services, cable television, data and Internet access to residential and business customers across the state under GCI brand. The company provides wireless telephone services over its own facilities under the GCI, Alaska DigiTel and Alaska Wireless brand names.

The company in 2009 had approximately 100,600 long-distance customers, 144,700 local access lines in service, 147,600 basic cable subscribers, 125,400 wireless subscribers, and 110,700 cable modem subscribers.

The company’s five segments are Consumer, Network Access, Commercial, Managed Broadband, and Regulated Operations.

CONSUMER SEGMENT

Consumer segment offers a range of voice, video, data and wireless services and products to residential customers.

Voice Services and Products

Long-Distance: The company is a full-service long-distance provider including intrastate, interstate and international calling.

Local Access: The company offers local access services in various communities and areas in Alaska, including the Anchorage, Fairbanks, the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, the Kenai Peninsula, and Juneau. Its own DLPS facilities and collocated remote facilities that access the ILEC unbundled network elements (UNE) loops allow to offer full featured local service products to customers.

Video Services and Products

Cable television systems serve 40 communities and areas in Alaska, including Anchorage, Fairbanks, the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, the Kenai Peninsula, and Juneau. The company offers a range of video services over its broadband cable systems. Its video service offerings include the following:

Basic cable: Basic cable service consists of digital basic service with access to between 13 and 21 channels of programming and an expanded digital basic service with access to between 40 and 102 additional channels of programming. These services consist of programming provided by national and local broadcast networks, national and regional cable networks, and governmental and public access programming.

High-definition television: The company’s high definition television (HDTV) service provides digital subscribers with improved audio quality and a wide-screen, theater-like display. Its HDTV service offers a selection of high-definition programming with access of up to 82 high-definition channels, including broadcast networks, national cable networks, channels, and national sports networks.

Digital video recorder: Advanced digital video recorder (DVR) service lets digital cable subscribers select, record and store programs and plays them at whatever time. DVR service also provides the ability to pause and rewind ‘live’ television.

Premium channel programming: Premium channel programming service, which includes cable networks such as Home Box Office, Showtime, Starz and Cinemax, offers, without commercial interruption, feature motion pictures, live and taped sporting events, concerts and other special features.

Video on demand: Video on demand service permits cable subscribers to order, individual feature motion pictures and special event programs, on an unedited, commercial-free basis.

Pay-per-view programming: Pay-per-view service permits cable subscribers to order scheduled individual feature motion pictures and special event programs, such as professional boxing, professional wrestling and concerts, on an unedited, commercial-free basis.

Data Services and Products

Internet: The company primarily offers four types of Internet access for consumer use: high-speed cable modem, dial-up, mobile wireless and fixed wireless. Value-added Internet features, such as e-mail virus prevention, personal web site and domain hosting, and additional e-mail accounts, are available for additional charges. Consumer high-speed cable modem Internet service offers up to 12 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload speeds as compared with up to 56 Kbps upload and download speeds through standard copper wire dial-up modem access. Fixed wireless Internet product is available in 120 communities.
