BMI View: Canada's vast wealth of renewable energy potential is undeniable and there have been a number of positive developments across every segment of the non-hydro renewables sector during 2013. That said, our fundamental assumptions of the market continue to be relevant, and thus our short and longterm forecasts remain mostly unchanged. We believe that the industry will witness patchy regional growth across the coming decade, owing to the divergent energy mixes at the provincial level and the differing levels of financial support offered to renewable energy developers.

Notwithstanding these issues, the country's considerable natural potential for renewable electricity generation and the positive developments witnessed across the majority of renewables segments over the last year do provide a boost to the industry:

Deep Earth Energy Production Corporation announced in May 2013 that it is planning to develop a 5MW geothermal power plant in the province of Saskatchewan, with estimated project costs of US $33.9mn and construction expected to start in 2014.
