Mexican speciality chemicals company Cognis has started a new SO3 sulphation plant at its Ecatepec site in Mexico.
The new facility is equipped with sulfation and ethoxylation technologies, and multi-purpose reactors, Cognis said.
The new unit will produce fatty alcohol sulphates, fatty alcohol ether sulphates and other surface active agents of improved quality, to be used in paints, paper coatings and agrochemical applications.
The new reactor will use crystalline sulphur instead of chlorosulfonic acid as the basis for the sulphation process, to manufacture purer products containing no chlorine byproducts.
Operating at lower temperatures, the new reactor will prevent organic components from discolouring and will retain their transparency, making them suitable for crystal clear formulations.
