LONDON – The real estate was the biggest asset class for HNWIs in Italy in 2012, accounting for around 26% of the country’s HNWI assets. It was followed by the equities and fixed income classes with 18.2% and 17.3% shares of the total Italian HNWI assets, respectively. Asset classes, which registered the strongest growth during 2008-2012, include alternatives, fixed-income and equities. The share of the Italian HNWIs’ alternative assets in the total HNWI assets grew from slightly over 8% in 2008 to approximately 11% in 2012. In 2012, Italian HNWI liquid assets climbed to almost USD 300 billion, calling for an approximately 26.7% share of the country’s wealth holdings.

By 2017, the allocations in commodities may fall to 2% of the country’s total HNWI assets given the increasing tightness of the global liquidity owing to expected decline in demand for raw materials from China in the near term which is likely to result the flattening out of the world commodity prices.
